Am sure by now you'll have noticed many photos up here and on my personal blog taken over in the Lake District.
I have hiked many of these mountains over the years. In 2004 I attempted to hike all 214 peaks in a year but had to give up after 120 peaks with shin splints on May 22nd.
A few weeks ago on the 23rd May 2009 I started the challenge again. Many people try to do the Wainwrights usually over many years and a few have done this in under a year. I am aiming to complete this by Dec 31st 2009 that's 7 months and 1 week which is a bit tight when you work full-time but hey it's a challenge that's the point.
So the 214 fells and the 40 routes I'll be using will cover minimum distance of approx:
422 miles / 678 km and
130,650 ft / 39,822 m of ascent and of course descent.
The challenge will be posted over on my personal blog under Wainwrights Challenge 2009.
Each summit and views will be photographed and where possible blogged from the summit.
The dreary photo above is the route up to the summit of Skiddaw on Sunday. Take a good look because this is how it looks 90% of the time. If there are any clouds hanging low in the Lakes they'll be over this fell. It is in my opinion the dullest peak in the lakes, I really do not understand it's appeal apart from the fact it's incredibly easy to get up it. Hence four guys staggering up in white plimsoles, gasping for breath as parts are steep and stopping for a fag! So I don't say this about many fells but I'am glad it's out of the way.
I've already completed a few of the routes over the past few weeks and will soon add them onto the site but for now Sundays trek is up there. Not a very exciting start to the photos as I spent most of the day in clouds! But the rest back in the valley below was worth it.
I'll add more details to the history of the Wainwrights and the man behind the name in time.
